Why #MillionMinutes and how will it help the COVID-19 crisis?

We have three goals:

#1:  MEET IMMEDIATE NEEDS OF OUR YOUTH AND FAMILIES

#2:  Provide youth consistent daily encouragement to exercise, mentally and physically (scroll down for daily challenges)

#3:  Sustain our organization during the crisis so that we can continue serving Chicago's youth

How are we meeting these goals?

#MillionMinutes is a national campaign for Beat the Street cities across the US.   Wrestling coaches and teachers are sharing daily workouts that we send to our youth via text and social media.  Children receive their physical challenge at 10am and their "brain game" enrichment challenge at 3pm - it could be reading, STEM, a wrestling match to critique or a brain teaser.  Scroll down to see our challenges, or follow us on Facebook or Instagram.

#BTSSaturdaySweat is an exciting highlight!  Each Saturday at 2pm CDT an elite wrestler will run a 30 minute workout through his or her Instagram Feed.  This has the added benefit of connecting our elite athletes to our youth in an inspiring and engaging way.  All-American and former US Team Member BJ Futrell will lead the first session on Saturday March 28.  Links to archived workouts will be posted here as they happen.

We encourage everyone - not just students - to try the exercises, do some of their own, post about it on social media and log their time spent in self-improvement.  When logging your minutes, pick your associated city - Chicago!  Each city has a goal of logging 100,000 minutes.

TIME IS MONEY! Or at least we hope it can be.

Generous donors - if you are in a position to contribute, we need help right now.  We hope to have each minute "sponsored" and raise $100,000 for the 100,000 minutes of life champion training.  Your online contribution will ensure that we can keep doing this work.  It is, and always has been, about more than just wrestling!

In addition to workouts and enrichment, we are doing what we can to help our most vulnerable families, such as:

  • Outreach and wellness check-ins via individual calls and texts
  • Literacy support to get books sent to students' homes
  • Weekend meals to augment the weekday free-lunch program
  • Post-secondary school planning through mentors

The COVID-19 crisis will end, soon, we hope.  During this crisis, we will continue to be there for our student-athletes.  Donate to Beat the Streets Chicago to support our crisis services - and invest in a better future for all of us.
